Song of the Day (A-Z): Fugazi – Waiting Room

Day 23 (W) & here we are, Post-Hardcore perfection. Waiting Room by Fugazi is a spiky slice of furious & bouncy Punk Perfection. It’s an ode to the DIY work ethic which Fugazi are famous for. I’m including two videos because the live one has terrible sound, but demonstrates Waiting Room’s power to electrify an audience like few other songs can. Don’t you just want to be there?

Song of the Day (A-Z): Parquet Courts – Violence

Day 22 (V). I was originally going to choose Venus In Furs by The Velvet Underground for today. Event’s in the world have forced me to reevaluate though & it feels correct to choose Violence by Parquet Courts from their 2018 album Wide Awake! Violence is a rallying cry against the Violence inherent in American society. “Violence is daily life”.

In the wake of the murder by Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin of unarmed & handcuffed black man, George Floyd, it seems respectful to acknowledge & pledge resistance to the systematic racism which grips America an always has done.

This post signals solidarity with the people of Minnesota & wishes them well in their uprising. Keep up the pressure, comrades, & watch out for police agent provocateurs in your midst, like Jacob Pederson, the Minneapolis police officer who donned a gasmask & smashed the windows of a branch of AutoZone while carrying an umbrella.

Violence is the fruit of unreached understanding 
That flowers from the lips of scoundrels

Song of the Day (A-Z): Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks – Us

Day 21 (U). Us is the closing track from Stephen Malkmus’ second post-Pavement album, and first under the ‘& The Jicks’ moniker, Pig Lib.

Built around trademark Malkmus guitar figures & a solid backing by the Jicks, who are an excellent band. Lyrically, Us features Malkmus’ trademark brand of off-kilter, abstract storytelling & seemingly throwaway lines. Malkmus has confirmed in interviews for his 2018 Sparkle Hard album that some of his weirder lyrics are placeholders which he never got around to changing. I don’t know about you but I take great comfort from human imperfections in one of my heroes.

This version of Us was recorded at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

I’m a big fan of the concert that this performance is taken from & watch it fairly regularly. It’s just Malkmus with an acoustic guitar & an overdrive pedal. He seems drunk & he plays loads of Pavement tunes. He even plays Blue Arrangements by Silver Jews. Here as a bonus is the full version.

Song of the Day (A-Z): Suede – Trash

Day 20 (T) & we’re listening to Trash by Suede. Trash was the first single from their ’96 album Coming Up. With it’s heroic depictions of the faded glamour of working class Britain & it’s soaring, reverb-drenched chorus it was a surefire hit for Suede at the absolute peak of Britpop’s chart success. It’s hard to imagine a song celebrating the underclass reaching number 3 in the charts in 2020.

Singer Brett Anderson describes Trash as being “about believing in the romance of the everyday.” He describes it as the soundtrack of is life & it’s about the ethos of Suede & about “being a Suede… person”.

Song of the Day (A-Z): A Tribe Called Quest – Scenario (feat. Leaders Of The New School)

Day 19 (S). In Scenario, A Tribe Called Quest & Leaders Of The New School combine their powers to drop what is widely considered the best posse rap. Each rapper gives jaw-dropping performances & the Q-Tip production is excellent.

Some also credit Scenario as being the song which launched Busta Rhymes’ career. His verse here is ridiculously good & has passed into Hip-Hop culture & mythology to such an extent that other artists quote from it (“Raow, raow like a dungeon dragon”) in respect.

The music video, directed by Jim Swaffield, plays on an interactive desktop, and features cameo appearances by Spike LeeDe La SoulBrand NubianFab Five Freddy and Redman.

Song of the Day (A-Z): Silver Jews – Random Rules

Day 18 (R). The late, great David Berman was as much a poet as he was a musician and “In 1984 I was hospitalized for approaching perfection” is generally considered to be one of the greatest lines to ever open an album. Random Rules opens Silver Jews’ (affectionately known as the “Joos”) third studio album, American Water, a key album in both Indie Rock mythology & a masterpiece by a truly unique artist. A truly unique artist who will be sorely missed.

Song of the Day (A-Z): Garbage – Queer

Day 17 (Q). I was actually quite worried about the letter Q. I couldn’t think of anything for ages. When I sat down & started to look through my record collection though I actually found plenty.

Garbage were a great Indie Rock band from the mid-to-late ’90’s. Garbage featured Butch Vig, who produced Nirvana’s Nevermind, & seemed to have some crossover potential with the heavier Rock crowd. I remember their song Push It being on a free Kerrang! CD & their music in general being played at the Alternative Nights at local nightclubs (which mainly played Metal/Nu Metal at the time).

Queer, like much of their material, seems to draw liberally from a wealth of influences ranging from Trip-Hop to Industrial. I don’t really remember it’s release but I imagine the title probably caused a bit of a stir & generated some excellent publicity. Attitudes towards sexuality were still fairly underdeveloped (to put it diplomatically) in 1995.

Song of the Day (A-Z): Mogwai – Party In The Dark

Day 16 (P). Predominately instrumental Post-Rock pioneers Mogwai trying their hand at psychedelic Dream-Pop. This is Mogwai at their most playful & seems to me to suggest shades of latter day Slowdive & (pretty much any period) New Order. Taken from their 2017 album, Every Country’s Sun, Party In The Dark came out just as my own band, Nauseous Skies, was forming & was a huge influence on our sound. We included it in our playlist of reference material we gave to the engineer when we recorded our debut singles, Only Shadows and Stay Young.

Song of the Day (A-Z): Wire – Outdoor Miner

Wow, we’re already at day 15 (O). This is one of my favourite songs of all time & quite possibly one of the songs that started the whole Indie Rock ball rolling, Outdoor Miner by Post-Punk pioneers, Wire. Taken from their second LP, 1978’s Chairs Missing, Outdoor Miner bears striking similarities to much of the Indie Rock which came along in it’s wake.

Always eager to find new & interesting things to write about, the experimental lyrics to this song are based on bassist Graham Lewis’ fascination with the Serpentine leaf miner, a fly larva, & details it’s life cycle. The song is even mentioned on it’s wikipedia page.

Song of the Day (A-Z): The Thermals – No Culture Icons

Day 14 (N). This writer first heard The Thermals, and this song in particular on the excellent Sub Pop Sampler CD, Infecting The Galaxy One Planet At A Time (pictured). Released in 2003, it was an excellent collection of amazing indie music at the time & I wore out my copy from overplay (as a result of writing this post, I have ordered a new copy. I shall write a retrospective review of it when it arrives. For nostalgia’s sake).

No Culture Icons is a fiery blast of DIY, lo-fi Indie Punk which, in hindsight, should have been massive at a time when bands like The Strokes & The White Stripes were experiencing large scale commercial success. The rawness of the production may have been all that excluded No Culture Icons, and it’s parent album More Parts Per Million, from greater success.

The Thermals did go on to experience moderate success. Their third album, The Body, The Blood, The Machine (a scathing George W Bush-era protest album telling “the story of a young couple who must flee a United States governed by fascist faux-Christians.”), produced by Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, went on to enjoy cult success. Pitchfork placed it at number 186 on their list of top 200 albums of the 2000s.
