System Of A Down – Genocidal Humanoidz (video)

Back in November I wrote about, Protect The Land & Genocidal Humanoidz, System Of A Down’s first new music in fifteen years. The focus was the excellent video for Protect The Land, with its heroic depictions of those who fight against genocide & the lengthy statement the band released alongside it.

Yesterday, the band released a new video for the second of those two songs, Genocidal Humanoidz, a powerful animation depicting a child’s fight for survival in a wartorn cityscape interspersed with footage of the band furiously performing the song. Classic System Of A Down.

Here’s the video for Protect The Land too, in case you missed it.

Song of the Day (Chaotic Neutral): Saint Etienne – Only Love Can Break Your Heart

Day 18.

I’ve always loved this superb cover of the Neil Young classic Indie Popsters Saint Etienne. I originally heard it on a compilation titled The Best Album In The World…Ever! (pic below because there was a whole series of these and they were unnumbered).

I’ve been hearing it a lot at work recently as we often listen to Absolute Radio ’90’s, which plays it extremely regularly. If you’ve been following this series of Song of the Day, you’ll know that Absolute Radio ’90’s has been a fairly reliable source of inspiration. Interestingly, the album from which this single was taken, Foxbase Alpha, will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in September of this year, so look out for a blogpost about it nearer the time.

When you were young
And on your own
How did it feel to be alone
I was always thinking of games
That I was playing
Trying to make the best of my time

But only love can break your heart
Try to be sure right from the start
Yes, only love can break your heart
What if your world should fall apart

I have a friend I’ve never seen
He hides his head inside a dream
Someone should call him and see
If he can come out
Trying to lose the down that he’s found

But only love can break your heart
Try to be sure right from the start
Yes, only love can break your heart
What if your world should fall apart

I have a friend I’ve never seen
He hides his head inside a dream

Yes, only love can break your heart
Yes, only love can break your heart
Yes, only love can break your heart
Yes, only love can break your heart
Yes, only love can break your heart

Echoes from Ectoslavia: David Berman Correspondence Interview on The Believer

Apologies if you’ve already seen this, as it was published in January 2020, but I’ve only recently found this excellent interview with David Berman, conducted by email in the months leading up to his death in August of 2017.

The interview is full of interesting insights into Berman’s thought processes and links to excellent reading material and music which he enjoyed.

Here’s some of Berman’s excellent music videos from both Silver Jews & Purple Mountains.

Song of the Day (Chaotic Neutral): Superorganism – Something For Your M.I.N.D.

Day 17.

This plodding, downtempo Indie Pop gem first came to my attention during the first episode of the third season of the Marvel Comic’s TV adaptation Legion. This bizarre but wonderful series implements music & performances throughout & the band themselves appear in the scene, performing the song.

I’ll include below both the original video & the scene from Legion. Both are fantastic.

I know you think I’m a psychopath
A Democrat lurking in the dark
This sucks, I’m the K-mart soda jerk
Cirque du trash, I kept the stash
Of cocoa candy straight from Japan
Hologram Anne, she was never as near
I think you know what I need to get by

Something for your mind (mind), mind (mind), mind (mind)
Something for your mind (mind), mind, mind (mind)
Something for your mind (mind, mind, mind) (무엇인가 정신에 집어넣으세요)
(마음에 어떤 것 필요합니까?)
Something for your mind (mind, mind) (정신에 집어넣으세요)
(정신에 집어넣으세요)
Something for your, for your
M-I, M-I, M-I-N-D
M-I, M-I, M-I-N-D

I know you think I’m a sociopath
“My lovely prey, ” I’m a cliche
Make way I’m in my Pepsi mood
Mama needs food, how about a barbecue?
For us the bourgeoisie, so carefree
Remember when we?
I don’t know what you need to get by

Something for your mind (mind), mind (mind), mind (mind)
Something for your mind (mind), mind, mind (mind)
Something for your mind (mind, mind, mind)(무엇인가 정신에 집어넣으세요)
(마음에 어떤 것 필요합니까?)
Something for your mind (mind, mind) (정신에 집어넣으세요)
(정신에 집어넣으세요)
Something for your, for your, for your (for your)
M-I, M-I, M-I-N-D
M-I, M-I, M-I-N-D

Song of the Day (Chaotic Neutral): Guv’ner – Break A Promise

Day 16. Feeling terrible that I haven’t done a Song of the Day post for so long. I feel like I broke a promise.

This band was introduced to me a few years ago by a work colleague who thought I’d like them because he knew I liked Pavement. He wasn’t wrong.

Break A Promise is exactly the kind of ramshackle, melodic Indie Rock that I love.
