Day 11. I’ve just realised another link between the previous two songs which I didn’t click on to at the time. The Delgados song & Miss Modular by Stereolab were both released on each band’s own record label. The Delgados on Chemikal Underground & Stereolab on Duophonic Records. By way of apology (to myself) I’ve decided to make that the link to todays Song of the Day.
Superchunk formed Merge Records in 1989 as a means of releasing music by themselves & their friends bands. 1994’s Driveway To Driveway is a bona fide Alternative Rock anthem & it’s criminal how little known (outside of the bands considerable cult following, anyway) it is today. It’s hard to ignore the feeling that, if signed to a major label (& the industrial marketing machinery associated with the majors), Driveway To Driveway may have achieved Smells Like Teen Spirit levels of chart success.
I still have briars in my clothes
Did I lay you down in those?
The names on the stones were all erased
And I thought it was you that I had chasedDriveway to driveway drunk
I don’t remember this too well
Glad I have the scrapes to prove
Prove it was me who fellAnd the names were all we knew
And the names were all erased
From stage to stage we flew
A drink in every handMy hand on your heart had been replaced
And I thought it was you that I had chased
Driveway to driveway drunk
I don’t remember this too wellGlad I have the scrapes to prove
Prove it was me who fell
And the names were all we knew
And the names were all erased
